In the underbelly of the Parisian criminal world, the Police are frustrated by a gang committing a series of violent robberies. Leo Vrinks and Denis Klein are two cops seeking promotion, and the imminent departure of the Chief sets the scene for them to compete for the vacant throne. The competition between them becomes increasingly ruthless and blurs the usual lines of morality, until there seems no difference between the police and the criminals they chase. Vrinks, meeting with a source, becomes involved with a murder. Klein seizes the opportunity to up the ante and arranges for the arrest of Vrinks, but when he goes further and viciously involves Vrinks' wife, Camille, revenge is inevitable.
The French have a great reputation for cop films but this is the best yet.

Fast paced, well scripted, excellent characters and dark deeds all combine to produce an engrossing film. Of course the main thread is the past and current relationship between the two rivals. The latter only hinted at later in the film.

But even apart from the protagonists, it is the diverse range of characters and their interaction that gives the film the depth it so well deserves.

It has just been cinema (Dec 2005) released in Australia and only to those few remaining Art House theaters. Go see it and if it's not showing near you, but it on DVD. It's a keeper. what kind of death does a murderer of a pregnant wife of an old friend deserve a person? Probably a head-shot from the avenger. Yet, this would be the least deserved death for the bastard. He(murderer) got left with the conscience that would slowly kill him. That was the idea, in my opinion.
