The best approach to build muscle really doing intense, partial reps to failure or near failure. Yes, you read this right; partial reps to failure. I am living proof that this method works. Oh, I am not stating you won't make any progress technique full range reps. I'm also not to imply that you can't make some progress by not training to frustration. I am saying, however, if you adopt to this "old school" method really can greatly lower your progress on the long haul.
